UK neobank Monzo was granted a full banking licence by the Central Bank of Ireland (CBI) and the European Central Bank (ECB) on 17 December 2025 — its first authorisation to operate as a regulated bank within the European Union.

What the Licence Enables

The Irish banking licence allows Monzo to:

  • Open accounts for customers resident in Ireland (initial market) with Irish IBANs
  • Accept deposits covered by the Irish Deposit Protection Scheme (up to €100,000 per customer)
  • Passport services across EU member states under CRD IV (subject to notifying relevant host country regulators)
  • Offer the full range of personal, joint, business, children’s, and savings accounts

Dublin was named as Monzo’s EU headquarters — the operational base from which it will manage all EU-regulated activities.

Product Plans for Irish Customers

At launch (early 2026, waitlist phase), Monzo planned to offer Irish customers:

  • Personal accounts with an Irish IBAN
  • Joint accounts
  • Business accounts (including sole trader and limited company)
  • Children’s accounts
  • Instant-access savings accounts (variable rate, indicatively 1.6% at launch)

Notably, Monzo stated it would launch without its UK investment or crypto features — the EU product would be banking-first.

Context: Two Years in the Making

Monzo first announced its EU banking ambitions in late 2023 and spent approximately two years working through the CBI authorisation process. The Irish route follows a path taken by several UK fintechs post-Brexit: Revolut (Lithuania), Starling (exploring Ireland), and Wise (Belgium for EU IBAN).

The timing — 17 December 2025 — came just two days after BaFin announced fresh sanctions on N26, making Monzo’s arrival a timely alternative for EU consumers seeking a well-regarded, fully licensed neobank with strong support credentials.
